What is Toyo-Sasaki HS Toughening Technology?
What is Toyo-Sasaki HS Toughening Technology?
When choosing premium glassware, beauty is only part of the story. Durability, safety, and everyday practicality are just as important, especially for glassware used daily in homes, cafés, restaurants, and bars.
This is where Toyo-Sasaki's HS (Hard Strong) Toughening Technology stands apart.
Developed in Japan and refined over more than 50 years, HS technology combines elegant, lightweight glass with exceptional strength, making it one of the most trusted glassware technologies in the Japanese hospitality industry.
What Does HS Mean?
HS stands for Hard Strong.
Introduced by Toyo-Sasaki Glass over five decades ago, the HS range was created to solve a common challenge: producing glassware that is both beautifully thin and durable enough for everyday use.
Today, HS glass is widely used in restaurants, cafés, hotels, and homes throughout Japan and around the world.
- HS means safety
- HS Means durability and value
- Dishwasher Safe for both commerical and household use
- More than 50 years of excellence as Japan's first toughened glass drinkware brand
How Does HS Toughening Work?
Unlike ordinary glass, HS glass undergoes a specialised strengthening process that creates a protective layer of compressive stress across the glass surface.
Toyo-Sasaki has developed two forms of HS technology:
HS Full Surface Ion Toughening
Applied across the entire surface of the glass, this advanced process is ideal for thin, lightweight designs and complex shapes. It provides enhanced durability while maintaining exceptional clarity and elegance.
HS Glass-Edge Toughening
Some products are strengthened around the rim, the area most likely to receive knocks during everyday use. This improves durability while retaining the familiar breakage characteristics of conventional glass.
Unlike physically tempered glass, Toyo-Sasaki does not produce fully physically toughened drinkware. Their proprietary ion toughening process is designed to improve durability without the sudden explosive shattering sometimes associated with fully physically tempered glass.

Why Choose HS Glass?
Lightweight Yet Strong
HS technology allows Toyo-Sasaki to produce remarkably thin and lightweight glasses without compromising everyday durability.
The fine rim enhances the flavour, aroma, and mouthfeel of beverages, creating a more refined drinking experience.
Enhanced Durability
Compared with conventional untreated glass, HS Full Surface Ion Toughened glass demonstrates significantly greater impact resistance in Toyo-Sasaki's testing, making it well suited for both commercial and home use.
Excellent Scratch Resistance
Everyday use inevitably causes glasses to rub against one another during washing and storage.
HS Full Surface Ion Toughening helps improve scratch resistance, allowing glasses to maintain their clarity and appearance for longer. Restaurant testing also showed noticeably fewer surface scratches after extended use compared with non-toughened glass.
Dishwasher Safe
HS glassware is designed for repeated dishwasher use in both domestic and commercial environments.
This makes it an excellent choice for busy kitchens, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and everyday family dining.
Improved Safety
Should an HS glass break, it fractures in a manner similar to conventional glass rather than the abrupt, explosive shattering that can occur with some fully physically tempered glassware.
This provides greater confidence for both commercial and domestic use.
Understanding the HS Labels
Toyo-Sasaki identifies different HS ranges using coloured labels.
HS Platinum

The most advanced HS range.
HS Platinum features Full Surface Ion Toughening, offering Toyo-Sasaki's highest level of durability, scratch resistance, and refined lightweight construction. Many HS Platinum collections also feature ultra-thin rims and sophisticated contemporary designs.
Popular collections include:
- Usurai
- Usuyo Washi
- Fino
- HS Platinum Stackable Series
HS Gold

A premium HS range primarily used for glasses with cold-cut (CC) finished rims, combining refined finishing with enhanced durability.
HS Blue

HS Blue offers reliable everyday durability and is trusted by professional hospitality businesses throughout Japan.
Fine Clear Glass
Many HS collections are made using Fine Clear, Toyo-Sasaki's premium soda-lime glass material.
Developed using carefully selected raw materials and advanced manufacturing techniques, Fine Clear minimises iron content in the glass, resulting in outstanding transparency and brilliance comparable to crystal while remaining lead-free.

Designed for Everyday Living
Whether you're serving whisky on the rocks, enjoying a highball, sharing sake, or simply drinking water, HS glassware is designed to make everyday moments feel more refined.
By combining Japanese craftsmanship, innovative engineering, and elegant design, Toyo-Sasaki continues to set the standard for durable, beautifully crafted glassware.
