Crafted by Asakura Kagu, a Japanese furniture maker founded in 1950, the Makanai Stool is inspired by the Japanese concept of makanai - making thoughtful use of materials with care, skill, and respect for the resource.

Made from solid Snow Beech and finished with natural oil, each stool celebrates the unique character of the timber. Originally conceived as a way to make use of shorter lengths and distinctive pieces of wood left from larger furniture production, the Makanai Stool transforms these materials into a beautiful and practical everyday object.

Its simple, versatile form makes it equally suited as occasional seating, a bedside table, a plant stand, or an accent piece throughout the home. Multiple stools can also be stacked for convenient storage when not in use.
