Known overseas as the “Hori Hori Knife”, this traditional Japanese mountain vegetable and leisure knife is highly regarded for its versatility, strength, and rust resistance.

A single tool that can handle nearly all gardening and outdoor tasks, it has earned widespread trust among gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.

The design traces its origins to the Matagi, traditional Japanese mountain hunters who originally carved pointed bamboo tools for foraging and digging. The distinctive curved blade evolved from this shape, giving the knife its uniquely Japanese form - admired internationally for both its beauty and functionality.

Each blade is mirror-polished and fully heat-treated for even strength, corrosion resistance, and easy resharpening. Its curved, sharpened edge makes it perfect for digging, cutting roots, dividing plants, and weeding, while the inch and centimetre depth markings allow precise planting and soil work.

Our products are made with love and care in Japan, but it’s with you where their story lives on. And for that to happen, we need to make sure they arrive with you in one piece! We carefully wrap each item in bubble wrap and traditional Japanese newspapers (you’ll often find a Japanese crossword or sudoku to solve!). You’ll also receive a short guide on how to care for and cherish your new tableware. Sustainability is important to us and we’re working hard on ways to keep items safe while being kind to the planet, too.
