Japanese lacquer is made from the sap of the lacquer or urushi tree, native to Asia. The sap is a close relation to poison ivy and is poisonous to the touch until it dries. In the most basic terms, the urushi sap is a naturally made plastic and is a highly resistant and durable material. Once sap has been collected, it is gently heated to remove any of the toxicity and excess moisture. The resin from the sap then hardens and takes on the same characteristics of plastic after it is exposed to moisture and air. Our modern lacquerware is formed from a plastic (urethane) base and coated with traditional urushi lacquer, making it both practical and beautiful.

Most of Made in Japan products are sourced from small, family-run kilns in Gifu on the central island of Honshu, with the rest of our collections sourced from all over Japan. Our products make their way from Japan to our lovely warehouse in Yorkshire, where we keep them safe until it’s time for them to head to their new homes.

What makes our products so special

What’s in the box?

Our products are made with love and care in Japan, but it’s with you where their story lives on. And for that to happen, we need to make sure they arrive with you in one piece! We carefully wrap each item in bubble wrap and traditional Japanese newspapers (you’ll often find a Japanese crossword or sudoku to solve!). You’ll also receive a short guide on how to care for and cherish your new tableware. Sustainability is important to us and we’re working hard on ways to keep items safe while being kind to the planet, too.
