Care Notes: Natural Movement of Hinoki Wood
Hinoki is a natural wood, and slight movement such as warping may occur over time. This is a normal characteristic of solid wood and not a defect.
Wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture depending on temperature and humidity. After washing or during drying, differences in moisture between the front and back surfaces may cause temporary warping.
With proper care and balanced drying, Hinoki cutting boards often return to their original shape as the moisture levels stabilise.
This natural behaviour is part of the beauty and authenticity of solid wood products.

Kodai's Approach to Minimising Wraping
To reduce the risk of warping as much as possible, the following measures are taken during production:
- The timber is kiln-dried to a moisture content of 10% or less before being processed into laminated boards
- For thinner boards (approx. 10 mm), an anti-warp spline reinforcement is applied to help stabilise movement across the grain
These processes reflect Kodai’s commitment to high standards of quality and consistency in wooden kitchenware for global use.
Minor warping can often be reduced or corrected with proper care:
- After washing, allow the board to air-dry naturally by standing it upright along the grain, ensuring both sides dry evenly.
- If warping appears, place the board flat with the curved side facing down, applying gentle pressure if needed.
- Avoid dishwashers, direct sunlight, and high-temperature or forced drying.
Hinoki wood has excellent natural resilience, and in many cases will gradually return to its original flat shape as moisture levels rebalance.
With mindful care, your Kodai Hinoki Cutting Board will develop character over time and remain a trusted kitchen companion for years to come.
We hope you enjoy the natural beauty, aroma, and craftsmanship of Hinoki wood as part of your daily cooking.
