Care & Seasoning Instructions - Donabe
Before First Use - Seasoning Your Donabe
Seasoning helps strengthen the porous clay and reduce the risk of staining or cracking over time.
1. Rinse rice gently in a bowl under cold running water.
Do not discard the first rice water.
2. Fill the donabe to around 80% full with the rice water.
3. Heat slowly over medium-low heat until it begins to boil, then simmer gently on low heat for around 15 minutes.
4. Turn off the heat and allow the pot to cool naturally to room temperature.
5. Once cooled, discard the water and rinse lightly with clean water.
6. Wipe dry with a clean cloth and allow the donabe to air dry completely overnight before storing or using.
Important Usage Notes
Donabe are handcrafted earthenware pots and can be sensitive to sudden temperature changes.
* Never heat the donabe empty
* Avoid rapid temperature changes
* Ensure the bottom of the pot is completely dry before heating
* Do not place a hot donabe under cold water
* Use medium-low heat or lower for best results
* Once boiling, reduce to low heat to continue cooking gently
Cleaning & Care
Because donabe clay is naturally porous, avoid prolonged soaking and minimise the use of detergent.
* Allow the donabe to cool completely before washing
* Wash gently with warm water and a soft sponge
* If needed, use only a very small amount of mild soap and rinse quickly
* Dry immediately with a clean cloth
* Allow to air dry fully before storing
As mentioned, most of our range is dishwasher and microwave safe, except a few ‘Crackle’ glazes, if you’re unsure then drop us an email info@mij.co.uk and we’ll be able to advise.
