How to Make Your Wooden Plate

1. Sketch

Draw your design onto the wooden plate with a pencil. Think about the overall shape, size, and any patterns or textures you would like to carve before you begin.

2. Carving

Once you have a clear idea of the finished design, use the carving knife to carve the surface of the plate. The depth and pattern of the carving are entirely up to you. You can also shape the edges and base of the plate to create a more unique and personalised piece.

3. Sanding

Smooth the plate using the included 150-grit sandpaper until any roughness has been removed. Then refine the surface further with the 240-grit and 400-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.

4. Apply Wax & Wipe

Apply a thin layer of beeswax to the plate using one of the included cloths. Once coated, use the second cloth to wipe away any excess wax.

If the beeswax container is difficult to open, warm it slightly with your hands before opening.

5. Dry & Finish

Allow the beeswax to dry for approximately half a day to one day. Once dry, your wooden plate is complete and ready to use.

For a more personal touch, consider adding a date, initials, or a special message to the underside of the plate.

Important Notes

  • Recommended age: 10 years and over.
  • Adult supervision is required for children.
  • The finished item is intended for use as a wooden plate only.
  • Do not use the carving tools without proper care and supervision.

What makes our products so special

What’s in the box?

Our products are made with love and care in Japan, but it’s with you where their story lives on. And for that to happen, we need to make sure they arrive with you in one piece! We carefully wrap each item in bubble wrap and traditional Japanese newspapers (you’ll often find a Japanese crossword or sudoku to solve!). You’ll also receive a short guide on how to care for and cherish your new tableware. Sustainability is important to us and we’re working hard on ways to keep items safe while being kind to the planet, too.
