Design: Riki Watanabe 渡辺 力 (1911 - 2013)
Riki Watanabe was one of Japan’s most influential designers and a pioneer of modern Japanese design. After graduating from Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Crafts, he founded Japan’s first independent design studio in 1949.
Throughout his long career, Watanabe worked across furniture, interiors, and public design, creating projects for major spaces including the Keio Plaza Hotel and Prince Hotels. Clock design became a lifelong focus, from household wall clocks to large public clocks such as the Dai-ichi Life Hibiya Pole Clock.
His work has received numerous honours, including the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale, the Mainichi Design Award, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Japanese government. In 2006, a major retrospective of his work was held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
